Practicing Blessing, Being Blessing (23 Jun 2012)

The Buddha described blessing as living in accord with the Dharma (teachings). In this way, through our thoughts and actions, our life becomes a blessing. In addition, however, many of us long to intentionally express a sense of the sacred in daily life. In this retreat, we will explore how, in the context of the Buddhadharma, we can invoke blessings for ourselves and share them with others to enrich our lives and practice.

The day’s program will include sitting and walking meditation, a dharma talk, time for questions, and opportunity for individual conferences with Susan.

Insight Dialogue and Metta: Opening to Life As It Is

led by Sharon Beckman-Brindley and Phyllis Hicks

Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation form, based in Vipassana. It expands solitary meditation by extending the mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion of silent practice into speaking and listening in contemplation with others. Through practice, we see directly and clearly how confusion and ignorance sustain both personal and interpersonal suffering.

This retreat focuses on learning and practicing Insight Dialogue. There will be times of silent practice, walking meditation, and mindful movement interwoven with periods of structured Insight Dialogue. We will practice metta - allowing our hearts and minds to open unconditionally to life and experience just as they actually are. As awareness deepens, we can experience for ourselves the profound Buddhist teachings on suffering and its cessation.

Residential Retreat: Wise Concentration: Steadying the Mind (18 Dec 2012)

 Wise Concentration: Steadying the Mind

 December 18th to December 23rd 2012
Insight Meditation Society Barre MA

As we cultivate concentration, we develop purification, tranquility and equanimity of mind and heart. These qualities prepare the ground for a penetrating insight into the nature of existence. This course will offer an introduction to and support for the practice of concentration (samatha in Pali), as taught by Burmese meditation master Pa Auk Sayadaw.

Open to both new and experienced meditators, the retreat will consist of alternate periods of silent sitting and walking meditation, daily dharma talks, and small group practice interviews. An optional daily period of yoga will be offered by Éowyn Ahlstrom.
